The Wait is Over: Dolly Ave’s Brand New “Bad Brain,” Other Ventures, and More to Come

Dolly Ave just dropped her dreamy, feeling-filled indie pop-rock single “Bad Brain” on May 5, 2026.

With introspective verses and a catchy chorus, this new single tells the story of what it’s like living with day-to-day struggles due to one’s own mental health. In terms of the songwriting, Dolly Ave says that it’s about "Frustration with not being exactly where I want to be in life. I am suffering from the weight of everyone’s expectations while navigating what I truly want. In the end I understand part of it is my own self-deprecating behavior. I accept my flaws and choose to continue on with uncertainty."

The opening verse introduces an indie rock sound, followed by a full band, reverberation that builds an ethereal vibe, and vocals that are delivered with a soft breathiness. The guitar trills along at the intro, with the bass and then vocals entering soon after. The quick hits of the guitar and bass build a distinct drive in the rhythm, but it slowly ushers things in with a sense of simplicity before the drums liven things up even more. There’s a bit of reverb in the guitars, which builds into an introspective sound, and the more held-out vocal notes contrast the quickness of the instrumentation, which gives them a bit of focus. It lyrically shares the idea of one waiting for their life to change while struggling with things not going quite as planned.

Then, the pre-chorus offers up another sound in Dolly Ave’s vocals with a lower-toned, bendy sound. Things pull back just a bit for this moment for the chorus to enter with strength. The vocals still have a soft, breathy twang, but they are delivered with some more force. It sounds crafted to belt along to during a car ride. The lyrics have a bit of a simplicity to them, which builds into the catchiness, but it delivers an acknowledgement that one has a “bad brain,” while feeling like one has lost parts of themself. Having this bad brain gives way to feelings of experiencing bad day after bad day.

The second verse gives more of a focus on the bass in terms of instrumentation, the start of it working with just a bass lead and hi-hats before building more of the drums in. Doing this makes the verse unique from the other, offering up a journey that’s truly dynamic. “The timing has never been so great / Always caught up in the chasing / Didn’t know what I was claiming,” this verse starts, before going into a repetition of the ending portion of the first one.

After a repetition of the first chorus, “Bad Brain” ushers in a bridge and outro. This starts with a focus on the guitar before the drums take control of the sound. The drums deliver quick snare hits, slowly rising in strength and speed before ushering in the full band once more. The bridge is an acknowledgement that this is just about how things work. It's about having to live with struggles due to one’s own mental health, and then it breaks into the outro, a repetition of, “I got it, got it, got it bad.” This harkens back to the chorus in a way that ties things together and adds an even more catchy vibe.

That is “Bad Brain.” It’s a bit ethereal and a bit catchy. It has rock and pop influences in a way that builds a beautiful melody while giving the punch that’s needed to deliver its narrative. It’s an accurate depiction of living with mental health struggles and having to deal with the mind and how it can control one's outlook. However, it does well at telling a story of acceptance and the will to move forward in strength. This is a message of hope, and may that message meet the ears of anyone who needs it.
