our editor-in-chief Allie Loven had a chance to sit down with Piff Mason, an independent artist, who introduces himself below in this interview. Enjoy!
al: would you like to introduce yourself?
pm; “I am piff mason. i do various things with sounds.
al: like what?
pm: “[i press buttons] engineering, putting the sounds together, to make beats. I guess you could say I’m a farmer, a sound farmer.” or a producer and engineer.
al: you’re an artist as well and make your own music?
pm: yes
al: when did you first put out music?
pm: i made my first song at 3.
al: how many projects have you had? not albums but more persona-esque?
pm: thats a good question, numerous. it’s a lot, i don’t know the number, if we’re counting everything even before distributing to all platforms, i didn’t start doing that until 2021.
al: whats your favorite song you’ve released or to put people on to you?
pm: right now… it’s “words of a poet”.
al: what’s that song about?
pm: it’s not necessarily about anything it’s more so just me—
al: words of a poet?
pm: yeah, i wouldnt say it has a deep meaning to it unless people pick apart things they can and i’ll leave that for them to do be because thats what art is for.
al: interpretation?
pm: yeah, it’s been about roughly 5 years since distributing as piff mason but 2019 is when i became piff mason.
al: was your first tour to New York in 2023?
pm: yes, i ate a hot dog in MSG, it was dry
al: you like your hot dogs wet?
pm: yeah
al: good to know
pm: the bun was dry.
al: whens the last time you released a song and made a song?
pm: besides a facebook drop last month, that now is on a deactivated account— the last time was the string of singles, including “Words of a Poet”; so that was the last time i really let loose.
al: you’ve made songs recently though, yeah?
pm: yes but they’re ass because i dont have the full setup i need to have so a lot of the new shit is shit but it’s okay though.
al: how many songs have you made on the platforms you’re using now?
pm: 6
al: oh i only knew two!
pm: yeah i didn't think the others were worth sending
al: wtf
pm: wtf is right
al: piff mason banned from starwave he just swore
him: laughs i will hoard all my music if i have to
al: already have them saved in a folder in my files
al: i have your music stuck in my head now
pm: word
pm: ACAB
al: ACAB
pm: all cars are busy
al: what…? oh . yeah
both: laugh
al: what are your goals for this year?
pm: stop being a pussy
al: in like every sense or?
pm: no, just musically; because, i’m not a pussy.
al: WELL not what i meant
pm: word
al: fair enough. what about what you do makes you feel like a pussy right now?
pm: because everything i think i make is ass which it probably isnt
al: it’s not
pm: i think it is and that’s all that matters.
laughing
pm: i need to love it and that’s all that matters
al:is that a complex?
pm: yes, i used to be fun im not as fun anymore.
al: that is true, life—
pm: and i be running out of things to say [writing songs].
al: why did you start distributing your music?
piff mason: it’s because i just wanted to do it, it’s something i always wanted to do; so i just wanted to put my music out. fuck it.
al: that’s kinda what i did with starwave. i just created it.
pm: i wanted to be the rappers i listened to as a child
al: who are your top 5, or so, inspirations for your art?
pm: lil wayne, tyler the creator, robert johnson, biggie smalls, MF DOOM, flying lotus
al: what’s your go to song currently?
pm: “accordion” by MF DOOM/MADVILLAIN
al: thank you for interviewing with us Piff! We look forward to future endeavors with your talents!
