Starwave Talks New Horizons with Alex Vito of Tendency [CHI, IL]

Updated: Aug 11

Starwave Magazine: Welcome, Alex! thank you for taking the time to talk with Starwave about your, long and anticipated solo project—Tendency. Tendency’s officially launching off with three new demo tracks on Friday, July 25th.

Alex Vito: Thank you! It’s a pleasure and I’m happy to be finally releasing music. I love the work that y’all do and I’m stoked to be a part of it!

Starwave Magazine: Was there strategic and / or  meaningful reasoning to influence these specific tracks for your first three demos to share?!

Alex Vito: The reasoning behind these songs was that 5 years ago when we were all stuck at home during the pandemic, I honestly just wanted to see what I could create. They’re a combination of my need to create and wanting to improve myself as a musician and songwriter.  I just sort of sat down at my computer and started recording something daily.

Starwave Magazine: Can you share with the starwave team what sparked the creation of Tendency?

Alex Vito: I think I always wanted to do stuff on my own, even in previous bands/projects. I never really had stuff that was ALL ME, and that’s what Tendency is for now, it’s an outlet for me and I’m able to express myself and explore music in ways that I didn’t even realize were possible when I started.

Starwave Magazine: What caused the ignition point of getting ready to share these songs?!

Alex Vito: I had recorded between like 10-15 demos like these that I have just sat on for 5 years. So I basically just said fuck it—it’s time to put some out, even if they’re not fully produced.

Starwave Magazine: Within these first three new songs from Tendency, what message are you wanting to convey to your audience right off the bat?

Alex Vito: I don’t know if I’m trying to convey anything per say, I’m just trying to be me and authentically myself and this is just what came out of that.

Starwave Magazine: What new ranges in your ability are you wanting to portray in your music with Tendency moving forward?

Alex Vito: I definitely want to show that I’m more than just a pop punk vocalist. Also—A lot of people equate lyric writing with vocalists in bands and that’s not necessarily true—but in this instance everything is written and recorded by me, guitars, bass, I programmed the drums, it’s not a great feat by any means but it’s all me and I’m trying to enhance my skillset to the best of my ability and in the future I will 100% have more complex riffs and things that show off my skills a little more, so to speak.

Starwave Magazine: What about Tendency do you personally feel sets you apart from others?

Alex Vito: I don’t know if it’s really any different than what people heard before but I mean it’s me—and it’s what I like to make so, I hope that people see that. I feel that it’s an interesting mixture with my vocal style mixed with the genre though.

Starwave Magazine: Lastly, is there any meaning behind choosing the title “tendency” for this project; if yes, how  so?

Alex Vito: Yeah originally the project was going to be called Day Jobs, and then Placeholder, but then in one of the first demos I ever created for this project, one of the lyrics was “my indecisive tendencies” and I thought tendency sounded way cooler than those other two lol

Starwave Magazine: That’s a wrap on our list of questions for you, Alex! Thank you for being such a genuine artist for us to work with + Happy Release Day!
