State Champs “Common Sense” Single Review

“Common Sense” is, the iconic, New York pop-punk band, State Champs’ new single. This is the bands’ first release since their 2024 self-titled album release last November [2024]. Fans are very receptive to the track. In less than a week, the band managed to have their new single surpass 100,000 listens on Spotify.

The song starts off with energetic guitar playing and heavy drums before the lead singer, Derek Discanio, comes in with his one-of-a-kind vocalization, to complete the melodic tune of the track together as a whole band. There is something so distinct about State Champs’ sound. A perfect harmony and unique rhythm to their sound is steady throughout every release, including “Common Sense”.

The song lyrically speaks on what seems to be a broken relationship dynamic. The first two verses are straight to the point and confrontational about taking accountability. In terms of functionalism, this relationship, and society’s standards— the relationship shows a strong dysfunctional dynamic. Within the first two verses, the triangle of love, founded by Doctor Robert Sternberg, is broken to pieces. The ‘triangle of love’ theory is built around intimacy, passion, and commitment. Without both partners having equal amounts to give in each area a relationship will struggle. How society operates in roles of love can explain the seemingly deeper anger beneath the song. Society writes how love is perceived and acted on, generations carry that down and choose to change it, or not. The evolutionary history of love, dating, having children, and getting married is completely different due to a systematic social change in how people approach love now. Social norms used to be commitment before anything else, but, now the more society has changed, it is not that way anymore. More people are wanting freedom, and therefore conflict arises without the commitment. The chorus, heavily emphasized, is representing watching someone become a person that is no longer who they were. The personality of the individual, perceived to be a former loved one, has changed into something so different that it was leading to express thoughts of: “Searching for a reason / Do I even need this?” Acknowledging that the same outcome will happen again if choosing the same path; because, well, the two “never had a sense in common” to work things out with their individual personalities now. The emotional depth that goes into State Champs’ work is something overlooked, but each piece of this songs’ composition is telling a message. Even if this is a direct reflection of an actual situation, everyone can relate in some sense, and if not State Champs lets you know “the taste of your own medicine is the worst to go down”. State Champs put out the top, pop-punk, breakup track of 2025 with “Common Sense”, whether they meant to or not. Sounds are reminiscent of their work from before but with a new flare of energy. Fast drumming, strong guitar riffs, and a strongly toned message lyrically display the realities of life and love in today’s society, so boldly as State Champs presents in “Common Sense”.
