Dawn‘s new release “getting older scares me to death" lines up seamlessly with their 2000s nostalgic aesthetic known to Davvn’s audience. This song has the same topic of the past and nostalgia, but with a dissection of it from another's perspective.
This song is written as a letter— to one’s parents and self about growing up. Asking questions to “mom” and “dad” about if they felt the same feelings that Davvn expresses at this stage in their lives, or, if existing is simply just feeling depression, boredom, and despair.
This song has deep-rooted messages within it. If you listen closely enough, you can hear the difference in the questions asked to the mother compared to the father. The father painted in this song struggles with the disease of addiction. Alcoholism was an influence on both father and family’s perspective throughout time. It speaks on how addiction can tear a relationship of any kind apart. Selfishness is rooted in the disease of addiction by nature, but in retrospect, these same questions could also be asked to someone in recovery offering a different perspective.
“Is this as good as it gets?", as the chorus says. Davvn’s lingering question throughout the song resides.
Instead of Davvn writing music about filling a void, they rather describe how to approach going through this stage of life. Everyone has those feelings of despair at times: that life will never get better than it feels at the moment. However, at any life stage, it is essential to emphasize the fact that life is a blessing. Many Individuals do not get the chance to ask these questions Davvn asks.
This release, “getting older scares me to death”, from Davvn is another reassuring pop rock anthem to remind people that they are not alone in their feelings, it is OK to feel, and that they should be asking questions to predecessors. Growing up is a never-ending process; the process just gets different. Sometimes the process is terrifying, but the process and journey of life is a blessing as Davvn captured so beautifully.
